LONDON’S FINEST RESTAURANTS. NEXT STOP REMOTE CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

In the action-adventure saga Outback Danger, before Pam Forbes moves to Central Australia to join the Flying Doctors, she travels to London for a two-year European adventure. Despite a miniscule, backpacker budget she is befriended by a wealthy, London based Sicilian barrister who wines and dines her in London’s finest bars and restaurants. Not the modern fad-eateries of the day, but to exclusive, long-established venues as famous as the city itself.

Hidden behind the grand façade of one of London's most famous hotels, they first meet in the American Bar at The Savoy, Pam feeling like she’d stepped into another era. The bartenders moved with effortless precision, the cocktails arrived beautifully crafted, and the room hummed with a quiet sophistication.

Her next date was at Roules, London's oldest restaurant, a place where history hangs on every wall. Dark wood panelling, framed photographs, and attentive service created a timeless atmosphere. Less like visiting a restaurant and more like part of a long-running London tradition.

Later came Simpson's in the Strand with its classic British cuisine, an increasingly rare experience

Then The Ivy, one of the city's most celebrated meeting places, rubbing shoulders with theatre-goers and business leaders.

At The Waldorf, elegance came naturally with grand interiors of the early twentieth century, while The Ritz and the Dorchester were true symbols of London luxury.

While she loved the view over Hyde Park from the Mandarin Oriental, Claridge's was simply unmatched. With its Art Deco interiors, impeccable service, understated glamour and its uniquely British experience, it was definitely her favourite.

Claridge’s, also the scene of a far more dramatic experience by another character in the forthcoming book Outback Refuge.

BUT REALITY IS NEVER THE SAME AS FICTION

Unfortunately, the author’s budget has never stretched to the full range of Pam Forbes’ London dining experiences. Pami and I have, however, been lucky to experience three of these venues on various visits, together with two lesser-known Michelin star restaurants.

ALL PART OF THE STORY

Few Australians in London, especially young backpackers, have experienced anything like Pam Forbes dining adventures.

But everything comes at a price, and what will her Sicilian barrister demand in return?
